Filip Dobias

Filip Dobias (b. 8 February 1990, Czech Republic) is a contemporary Czech glass artist whose practice is grounded in a deep engagement with material, perception, and the expressive potential of glass as an autonomous artistic medium. His work is characterised by formal restraint and optical sensitivity, exploring the relationship between light, colour, surface, and spatial tension through precisely executed glass objects.

Dobias received his foundational training at the Secondary School of Glassmaking in Valašské Meziříčí (2005–2009), where he developed strong technical skills in glassmaking and cold-working processes. He subsequently continued his studies at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM), graduating in 2014 from the Glass Studio under the supervision of Doc. akad. soch. Rony Plesl, one of the leading figures of contemporary Czech glass education.

In 2013, Dobias expanded his technical and artistic experience through an international residency at the Institute of Glass, Toyama, Japan, where he worked under the guidance of Jin Hongo. This period contributed to a deeper understanding of material discipline, precision, and the cultural contexts of glass practice beyond Europe.

Dobias’s work is defined by a refined balance between hand-formed glass and meticulous cold work. Employing techniques such as blowing, cutting, slumping, and fusing, his objects emphasise optical depth, structural clarity, and the tension between interior and exterior space. Rather than narrative or figurative reference, his practice centres on perception itself—how light is refracted, how colour is embedded within form, and how glass can articulate spatial presence through restraint and precision.

His works have been presented in a range of international exhibition contexts, including Glass Mania in London (2014), the Stanislav Libenský Award exhibition in Prague (2012), and Transparency Nation at the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague (2011). Through these presentations, Dobias has established a consistent artistic language that aligns technical mastery with conceptual clarity.

Based in the Czech Republic, Filip Dobias continues to develop a focused studio practice that positions him among the significant voices of contemporary Czech glass art, where tradition, precision, and perceptual exploration converge in materially rigorous and quietly powerful works.
