Johan Pertl
Johan Pertl (b. 1989, Czech Republic) is a contemporary Czech glass artist whose work is grounded in sculptural expression and material exploration. Raised in the Vysočina region—closely associated with Czech glassmaking—he developed an early sensitivity to glass as a fine art medium. Since 2020, he has maintained an independent studio practice and is currently based in Prague.
Pertl studied glass at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, where he refined a practice centered on hand-formed, unique glass sculptures.
Pertl’s artistic methodology is rooted in the hand-shaping of glass, emphasising direct contact with material and the controlled emergence of form through fusion, cold work, and modelling techniques. His practice reflects a sustained engagement with nature, philosophy, and conceptual investigation; he seeks to “tell stories with his objects,” where each piece manifests through an interplay of internal logic, perceptual experience, and material tension rather than through external narrative or applied ornament.
Inspired by nature and philosophical reflection, Pertl’s works are contemplative rather than illustrative, inviting close engagement with form, light, and presence. His sculptures have been exhibited internationally, positioning him among the emerging voices shaping contemporary Czech glass art.
