Johan Pertl is a contemporary Czech glass artist whose work is grounded in sculptural expression and material exploration. Raised in the Vysočina region—closely associated with Czech glassmaking—he developed an early sensitivity to glass as a fine art medium. Since 2020, he has maintained an independent studio practice and is currently based in Prague.
Pertl studied glass at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, where he refined a practice centered on hand-formed, unique glass sculptures. Working primarily with fused and hand-shaped glass, he embraces the natural behavior of the material, allowing subtle irregularities to remain integral to the finished work. In some series, glass is combined with natural materials such as marble, heightening contrasts between transparency, weight, and surface.
Inspired by nature and philosophical reflection, Pertl’s works are contemplative rather than illustrative, inviting close engagement with form, light, and presence. His sculptures have been exhibited internationally, positioning him among the emerging voices shaping contemporary Czech glass art.
The set of sculptural objects includes a conference table, a side table, and a wall object. The pieces are made of Czech glass and Italian marble. The Erosion series is inspired by the gradual and never-ending decomposition of everything around us, especially the landscape, coastlines, and river valleys. This decomposition is momentarily halted to allow for closer examination, made possible by the fundamental property of glass— transparency—which allows us to see beneath the surface of things.
