Filip Dobias is a contemporary Czech glass artist known for his restrained forms and precise exploration of light, color, and spatial depth in glass. He studied at the Secondary School of Glassmaking in Valašské Meziříčí and graduated in 2014 from the Glass Studio at UMPRUM in Prague under Rony Plesl, with further experience gained during a residency at the Institute of Glass in Toyama, Japan.
Working with techniques such as blowing, cutting, slumping, and fusing, Dobias focuses on structural clarity and optical perception rather than narrative expression. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague and Glass Mania in London.
Moon Table is a collaborative glass art object created by Filip Dobias together with Jakub Petr and David Gabera, conceived as a dialogue between material, light, and structural form. Executed with a high level of technical precision, the work explores the relationship between solid glass mass and the surrounding space, where optical depth and surface treatment become central to the viewer’s perception.
For this project, the artists developed a new approach to kiln-mould production using 3D modelling technology, based on a scaled representation of the lunar landscape at a ratio of 1 : 1,475,260. This process allowed the surface of the glass to translate the topography of the moon into a materially articulated relief.
