Ingrid Račková and David Suchopárek are a prominent artistic duo in contemporary Czech glass art, working under IRDS Studio, founded in 2001. Educated at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, Ingrid Račková trained at the Glass Studio of Professor Vladimír Kopecký, while David Suchopárek studied at the Glass in Architecture Studio of Professor Marian Karel. Their practice is defined by a rigorous commitment to geometry, precision, and conceptual coherence, elevating glass into a medium of architectural and intellectual expression.
Their sculptures, executed in optical glass, are characterized by disciplined, often pyramidal forms in which light becomes an active structural element. Alongside their sculptural output, Račková and Suchopárek also create glass paintings, extending their exploration of geometry, transparency, and spatial tension into a two-dimensional plane. Through layered compositions and restrained chromatic language, these works translate sculptural thinking into pictorial form, maintaining a strong conceptual continuity with their three-dimensional practice.
In Portal, Ingrid Račková transforms glass into a medium of light itself. Thick gestural brushstrokes, combined with a structure of fine translucent layers, create a composition that exists between painting, object, and spatial experience.
The work performs a subtle duality: it absorbs light and returns colour to the observer, while simultaneously allowing light to pass through, projecting delicate fields of colour beyond its physical boundaries. Elevated from the wall, Portal dissolves the traditional limits of painting, inviting the surrounding space to become an active part of the work.
Rather than presenting a fixed image, Portal offers an evolving encounter with light, one that changes with the viewer, the time of day, and the environment in which it is experienced.
